Pinch me if I'm wrong.
It is Thursday, December 10, right?
<basketball buzzer>
Time's up!
Woo-hoo. I think I was right. Score.
I wrote a poem once which contained this line: I never knew that life is laundry.
I was young, but what vision!
For the life of me I can't find the poem. Nor could I locate any clean laundry, even though I worship it.
To be honest, I didn't really care after holding babies and looking at their enchanting smiles all day yesterday and most of last night.
Not finding that stupid poem? In my head, I see that as a loss to posterity, and, perhaps, to humanity.
So it goes.
I get that now. Things come, then they vanish.
Babies smiles live forever.
Time to push forward. Lousy poem anyway.
Moving On, Part One: Keep this secret: I love the month of December.
It's idiotic. It's crazy. It's Christmas.
I suppose.
I can only imagine.
All I want for Christmas is a puter that does what I ask.
Jesu Christi Domine, I've three that don't.
Anybody lookin'?
They buffer.
And when I scan, some carnival barker pops up asking me for my bank.
I'm finding I can deal, as long as the thing doesn't crash.
I knock on wood as I say this, but I haven't had a computer crash in a while.
I could put up with buffering and not spending a couple hundred dollars on a scan scam.
The way I battle buffering is the same way I get more walking in during football games: each time the computer buffers, I take ten short laps around my kitchen island, then I return to my office.
I did that this morning and added .67 of a mile to my daily walking.
That doesn't sound like a heck of a lot, but as the day progresses, I come up with excuses to walk a few feet more than I normally do. It is a conscious effort.
I still go out and walk in parks and things like that; I'm just talking about giving myself some extra credit, which pays off with a little bit of healthiness I would otherwise not have.
Moving On, Part Two: I clearly have too much time on my hands.
I actually don't.
I have two gorgeous twin babies a little over a mile away.
Most of my waking hours are being the bench guy who comes in to take care of those two when everyone else is exhausted.
I can't think of a better post-career.
It's not an easy gig. But it's the best gig on the planet.
At one point yesterday we brought a dresser out to Caitlin's garage and brought a much nicer one in.
By a much nicer one, I mean an old one made of solid wood, almost no nicks or scratches.
The rule with wooden furniture is a) Get to know a excellent brands, and b) the heavier, the better.
I also worked in a furniture store for a couple years. I loved that job. It didn't pay much, but was fun. Mostly shipping and receiving, and then decorating the floor, loading stuff into customers' cars and trucks, and occasionally selling.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that I preferred the grunt work.
The store was W & J Sloane, at one time a pretty prominent organization. It has history dating back to 1848, which doesn't seem so long to this Old Brown Shoe.
Anyway, I rather like my new job.
The fringe benefits and the baby smiles make it the place to be.
With that, I'm going to cut this short.
Weekends begin on Thursdays.
You know it. I know it.
So we'll see you again.
Thanks for listening.
Have a GREAT day. Smile at a baby today. It will brighten your morning.
Peace.
