"That was...that was CRAZY."
---Steve Kerr
The Daily News
Stop the presses.
Sometimes things happen that appear earth-shattering.
There exists, then, a severe credibility risk when you try to put something earth-shattering into words.
Steph Curry gave the term new meaning last night.
Let's see how other reporters framed it.
Tim Kawakami, San Jose Merc News said this: "Nobody else can do this. Nobody. Else. Can. Do. This."
Courtney Cronin, a reporter for the Bay Area News Group, summed it up by declaring Steph's miracle "...a performance for the ages." Her coverage was spot on, by the way.
At one point Steph hit a circular three. All I heard coming off the screen was this: "Jaws drop everywhere..."
If someone caught that, send it to me. It stopped me in my tracks, and I jotted it down on a napkin.
Stop the Presses.
At 6:43 a.m. this morning, Ron Kroichick of SF Gate called it "...a stirring, scintillating performance by Curry..."
Do ya think?
Up in these parts, the Sacramento Bee had its own top story: the acquisition of Dave Joerger from Memphis. Are ya kiddin' me? How'd you miss the number one story in sports?
Stop the Presses.
I've seen LOTS of sporting events over the years, and this one was up there with the best of 'em.
The Catch, Mays' 3001 hit, Dravecky, and McCovey's Last Game come immediately to mind (I wasn't at the Earthquake game), but then I'm just deadlining here. I lay the blame of my own ineptitude on THAT one at the doorstep of the Sac Bee.
Like many others, I kept channel-surfing different sporting events last night. I had already written my outrage at the Sharks not controlling the puck , but I assumed they will take care of business when they take it to the Tank.
The Giants? I had already pounded out my diatribe about Peavy, Cain, scoring runs, and establishing consistency.
The A's? Off my personal radar, but I've always supported the A's unless they would be head-to-head against the Giants. I'll go easy on them because their own fans are probably expressing potential improvements. So I'll always support the A's.
I'll never wear a split cap, though. Sometimes you just gotta draw the line.
The spotlight this morning, however, should remain on Steph Curry, and the unbelievable effort he put in.
I still loved "Jaws drop everywhere..." as the quote of the evening, and I'll be damned if I could name who said it.
A game THAT intense finds people like me walking on eggs. I danced around the living room trying to put some miles on my legs, but my heart pounded, my eyes twitched, and my soul soared as I witnessed one of the greatest sporting performances of all time.
I'm certain I wasn't alone.
So Steph, I'm not so sure you even know what you achieved last night. You were just happy to be in there and back in the rhythm, and I'm convinced therein lies your popularity.
You are a bombshell. And your innocent dismissal of just being happy that you could contribute to the team was clearly genuine.
And everybody except you realizes that.
That's what separates you, and puts you up there with the greatest athletes of all time.
And now I turn to you, Sacramento.
Really? Dave Joerger. (It's pronounced Jäger (Yay-ger for you non-drunks).
That will be top news next season.
But really? That was NOT the top sports' story yesterday.
It's all about Curry this fine day.
For what it's worth, I hereby dedicate this morning's DN to this remarkable achievement.
And to you, Steph Curry. You're a class act.
You made the week, for many of us.
I thank you. WE thank you.
And with that, I must leave this for the ages.
And unless Idaho drops out of a baby's diaper this morning, I've nothing left to report.
Hope you guys enjoy your day.
See you again.
Have a GREAT day.
Peace.
