The DN

My NFL boycott ended last night.

I talk big, but I grew up with football.

It doesn't make it right, but the amount of stuff football players have gotten away with over the years is frightening.

The stories will continue, and sooner or later I think we will see change.

That's it. I semi-watched the Niners play their season pre-season game against the Rams last night. They're still experimenting after six games. It seems to be working. I still have a tough time getting into it. Too much thugging and mugging and too much off-field nonsense. I may change.

Moving Backwards, Part One: I love learning things from my students.

The other day a student said, "Mr. Harrington, did you know that if you say, 'Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo' it is a grammatically correct sentence?"

My English grammar guy instantly got on it. I know that a buffalo is a bison. I also know that "Buffalo" implies Buffalo, New York. AND I know that as a verb, "buffalo" is a transitive verb that means "to confuse, intimidate or bully."

I'll put you on that one.

<hint> there is a missing word "that" after the second buffalo, but it still works. I think <that> it is called a restrictive clause.

 I gotta get another job.

Maybe I could test online-Solitaire apps.

Moving On, Part One: Is it still baseball season?

 This is exhausting.

  Not complaining, mind you.

The game is this afternoon. I can't watch. I don't know what to do.

I thought about ditching school, but just couldn't. I pay taxes and I would piss myself off.

The idea of ditching school and going to the ball game is enticing. Such a kid thing to do!

I think of Hunter Pence's catch at the fence and it is such a Norman Rockwell moment that I did think about going up.

Ah, I'll put it on my bucket list.

Moving On, Part Two: Anybody lookin'?

  I got blue-lined last night.

I was writing this nonsense when a blue line appeared at the end of each letter. If I would go back to correct an error, the blue line would eat each letter in front of it.

At first I assumed it was my October deal with all things electrical.

I reminded Helene of that yesterday morning. She said,  "I think it might be user error." I then walked by the teevee and it instantly turned to static.

  October. I swear.

I found out yesterday morning that I get to use the school's theater on the 28th and on the 30th for ghost stories.

Everything at school this year is tentative, however, but it will be fun to be a tech guy and to continue the Heidi Chronz.

Yesterday the Sponge Bob thing chilled my students. I randomly told them about how Dad always says, "I can't hear you." I told them about my yelling, "Are you ready, kids?" and about the class that yelled, "Aye, Aye, Captain!!!"

And the Patchy the Pirate yelling, "I can't hear you..."

 SMH.

 Welcome to Hogwarts.

 Meet Heidi.

On the other hand, it could just be Mom goofing with me.

  They may have met.

  'Tober.

Every year, I swear to you.

Moving On, Part the Thoid: We were on a short day yesterday so we could get trained on administering the PSAT tomorrow.

I decided to tell a couple of Heidi stories early, and then use the Sponge Bob story to get them wondering.

I also had to hand back about six-thousand papers. I told the students I would give 5 points of extra credit if they would help hand back the papers. I next put two sign-up sheets on each side of the table in front of the room, and set their folders and papers in the middle.

I then said, "We need to do this in an organized fashion. Let's take an orderly approach as to how you are going to sign up and hand things back."

  South Park pause.

I looked up and yelled, "Are you ready kidddds????"

Sometimes I love my job. They all yelled and had a ball. I played some Sponge Bob, followed by a bunch of Jack Johnson stuff.

At one point a student jammed my stapler. He began wrestling with it just as Jack Johnson's Staple it Together played.

I forgot all about that song. I have bookmarked a two-hour mix of his music and always play it when the class is doing an activity. It's always upbeat and fun background.

I completely forgot that Staple it Together was part of the mix.

Fun times. It worked perfectly against the grim backdrop of PSAT training, or any meeting for that matter.

Sometimes you just have to do that. Sometimes you just have to smile.

  Gottago.

  See you again.

  Peace.
~H~
