The Daily News

1  Well Vinnie.

2  You always were a show stopper. I never realized you could be a life-stopper.

3  Your passing stopped traffic for hours yesterday. Social media halted when word hit.

4  I don't recall seeing anything like that in my life, although I don't recall much of anything in my life these days.

5  I wondered what would happen if I had one of those word thingys do a word thingy of words-most-used-in-Vinnie-comments.

6  Word clouds. There you go, thanks Caitlin! My daughter Caitlin gave me the name for the things. Here is a sample of a word cloud. We've all seen them:

7  I don't know how you generate them on someone else's Facebook, but I'm guessing from the outpouring of love I saw from friends and family, you would have gotten some of the following words. Let's see:

8  Smile, grin, laughs, spiritual, rock, love, kids, life, music, high-fives, old times, jammin', and all the rest.

9  I tried rolling it out yesterday afternoon, but my new laptop didn't have room to finish the job. Caitlin did a great job of creating one, but we couldn't get the editing done. Long story, but really not.

10  Turns out I bought the laptop used. It was sold to me as new, but it had been tampered with.  We combed installations dating back to 2014. My laptop didn't have room for the program to finish editing. So it goes. I want to thank Caitlin for a grandiose effort. Sometimes stuff just doesn't work. I'm sure we could put a word cloud together between now and May. Meanwhile, a lotta love and tears on the net yesterday. It was all for you. You moved mountains. You big, you big...

11  You just big. (Remember that one?).

12  You always were, and always will remain a presence, my friend. We all loved and still love you.

13  I'll continue writing stuff to you and about you. Someday we'll all be in one place, and the heavens will open up to the ultimate concert. You will be featured. I believe that. You will be featured.

14  Moving On, Part One: I still can't believe all the love that poured through Facebook yesterday. People from years back jumped right into the mix as though no time had passed.

15  I smiled at every single person. Who are they voting for? Nobody cared. Nobody. Vinnie equalized all of us, brought us all into a common thought: We realized just how amazing he was, and clearly still is.

16  Vinnie, you are that person who can pick up right where a friendship left off.

17  And so is your world. I had people I never met talking to me, and agreeing about this and that when it came to you.

18  Pretty special. I feel I grew closer to people I haven't seen in a while, as well as people I've yet to meet face-to-face.

19  And I don't think I am alone.

20  So I can't bring myself to say good-bye.

21  You say good-bye; we say hello.

22   Gotta love it. Word.

23  Moving On, Part Two: Remember, "Word?" Ever feel dated sometimes?

24  From what I can see, the only word for "cool" that has remained intact over the decades is the word "cool."

25  That's cool, I guess.

26  Anything else, you'd better consult me. You don't want to be moted

27  "Moted." I always spelled it that way because I figured it was an off-shoot of "demoted."

28  Ahem. Urban Dictionary's etymology, please:

29  Here go. First, remember this? The world's first meme:

    moted

short for demoted, popular in early 90's making a comeback.

(Your friend gets shot down by a girl) "Damn homey you just got moted"

30  You gotta like "making a comeback." My God. I

remember the first time I heard the word "moted."

My nephew used it one holiday night, outside, in the cold. He

said that a friend of his had gotten "moted" by a girl. Fast

forward to "making a comeback." I have yet to accept it

as a word, to this day. "Making a comeback?" Hold on.

I'm getting nostalgic. I'm getting caught up, yo. <tear>

31  You must understand that I had never heard the word in

my entire life. I didn't even consider it as a form of anything.

It was, in fact, completely alien to me.

32  That was the first time I had heard that term. It

came out around the same time as "24/7," and in fact, my

nephew used that one a second later. Both words arrived

between 1980 and 1990. For the record, "moted"

disappeared from high school usage by the year 2000. "24/7"

lasted, and I'm fine with that.

33  I thought the world was coming to an end. I had gone

through my entire life without ever having heard anyone

use either of those terms.

34  I claim it was the Man trying to confuse a barely-older

generation, a sort of metaphorical moving-of-the-boss's trash

can from one side of his desk to the other.

35  It was the end of the world. Honest to goodness.

36  At the risk of dating myself, I also don't remember when
the word "dope" became an adjective, and a distant cousin

to "phat." The same time-period. It used to mean a person
of unutterable slowness-of-study, a simpleton, a boob, a
knucklehead, a merry-andrew, and on and on. I looked it up
in Dictionary.com, and it had the slang definition as

"onederful." And that was Dictionary, not Urban Dictionary.
37  What's funny is that I was around during the transition
from "cool" to "bad." I remember geekedly shouting to no-one
in particular, "Uh, 'bad' means 'good' people! Orwellian!"
38  Nerd. Hey. What has two thumbs and is a total nerd?
39

This guy.

40  Haha. I'll finish this flourish with the word "sick." When
I was but a wee lad, "sick" meant, of course, "ill." It morphed
into "perverted, horrible." As the majority of you know, it has

recently morphed to mean"cool." When I consulted

Dictionary.com on this one, I found that it doesn't even

recognize "sick" as a slang term for "cool" yet. That is how

slowly these things creep into the language. We are on the

cusp of the word "sick" entering the dictionary as a slang

term for "cool," but is hasn't happened yet, at least not in

Dictionary.com. Sick, right?

41  And when you say it, you have to say it three octaves

higher and stretch the vowel so you would say, "Oooh, you

got a new Les Paul? That's s-i-i-i-i-i-i-ick!" <voice high up>.

42  And that's the way it goes.

43  Unfortunately, I gottago. The laptop is again acting up,

with the letters changing colors on me.

44  S-i-i-i-i-i-i-ick!

45  So we'll see you again.

46  Have a GREAT day.

47  Peace.

~H~
