The DN

  Anybody lookin'?

  <Looking around.>

  Okay. The coast is clear.

I enjoyed doing my JFK stuff this year because it was the fiftieth anniversary of his assassination, so while doing the unit this year I found all sorts of new materials strewn all over, like shoes in a hallway.

It's been fun though. The story continues to twist and turn and go down dirt roads.

  What a sordid, seedy story.

It seems every guy on the internet has some story to tell. And each story inevitably winds up with all sorts of people turning up dead in all sorts of odd ways.

I had just listened to some guy or other promoting his latest book, and finally turned it all off.

Nice hobby, but a little goes a long way.

I noticed that when I would listen to interviews with various authors and experts, the You Tube videos would often go fuzzy or begin buffering.

It always crosses my mind that somebody doesn't want people reading that sort of stuff, because there's too much potential truth in a lot of it.

  Fascinating story though.

Sometimes before I write this stuff I prepare myself with a small bowl of ice cream and a cup of coffee.

This might be after reading, listening to a talk show, or listening to an author.

When the topic of JFK sails into town, I'm always riveted, even though it becomes a labyrinth of mirrors and horrors.

The ice cream and coffee usually give me a modicum of rest.

Last night I had just scooped a bowl, and sat down with my coffee and began writing this rigamarole.

It was around 8:30 p.m. The day had settled in.

I sat on the Cloud, ice cream ready, coffee ready, and some oldies blasting through my headphones.

Suddenly someone banged on our front door.

  No lie.

I don't know about you, but if someone bangs on my door at 8:30 at night, I'm scared.

We ran to the door. Helene yelled, "Who is it?"

I took a flashlight to the porch and scanned. I heard our gate slam and a car peel out.

When I saw the porch vacated, I opened the door.

I looked down. A Macy's box sat on my doorstep, placed in perfect symmetry at the center of the doormat.

  I stared down.

  A Godfather pause.

It was a Macy's box. Maybe they heard I criticized them for celebrating Columbus Day earlier this year.

For whatever reason I flashed back to when I first did activities at the school. We were going through safety training. Midday. It was lunch time.

The cop training me pointed at a lunch bag on the edge of our quad steps.

"See that?" he asked. "That's a bomb," he said, pointing at some kid's lunch. I looked at the guy the same way you would look at the neighborhood kook.

"That's the way we have to think. You need to think that way too."

I never believed it for a second. I figured HE was a kook.

But last night as I stared at the Macy's  box on my porch, I heard his words. "That's a bomb, a bomb, a bomb..." <dramatic echoes>.

Helene told me to bring it in. I looked at her like she had twelve heads. "Are you kidding?" I asked. "That could be a bomb!"

I moved it out to the front of the gate.

  You can't be too careful.

After a few text messages we found it was something my daughter had purchased and sent to the house.

  But at 8:30 at night?

I thought they had finally come to silence me.

  Not so.

I got back to my ice cream, coffee and oldies. Sly and the Family Stone got the party started with Dance to the Music.

Fun Christmas commercials chimed off the teevee, and all returned to normal.

 Lots of laughs.

The stuff we do sometimes, I swear.

I'm going to get off conspiracies, the CIA, spies, and all those other nightmares.

I prefer ice cream and fun stuff.

  Have a little fun today.

Life's too short to waste worrying all the time.

Some Lovin' Spoonful just joined the ice cream and coffee for some sweet smiles.

 Let's leave today with that.

 Have a GREAT day!

 See you again.

 Peace.
