The DN

I can't stop watching American Idol. Or glancing at American Idol, to be more precise.

The trouble is that I have it on each week to serve as a lava lamp while I relax with ice cream and coffee beans.

I have consistently picked who was going through to the next round this year. Kind of fun guessing. Sometimes I'm busy with other things, but I'll glance over my glasses and say, "Oh, put HER through!"

I've taken few notes and don't pay attention too much to names.

I like the comments by the judges.

"She's like a quiet storm," Jennifer Lopez said of 20-year old contestant MK Nobilette. After her audition, Nobilette was interviewed. What she said was awesome and historic:

"I'm obviously gay," she said. "And there are always gonna be people in America and everywhere else who will definitely hate me. But I think that in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing."

This prompted the wonderfully entertaining Harry Connick, Jr. to say quietly, "Thank goodness." Nobilette went through and is still in it, and I think J Lo's analogy helped get her there. She didn't have the power of many of the others, but there was a quiet coolness to how she sang, really pleasant and sweet. She got heads swaying. I found out later in the evening that she was the first openly gay contestant in the history of American Idol. Amazing. Congrats MK, and godspeed.

I think I'll cut the Am Idol stuff here or I won't be able to slug this one out. Too much talent and I can't keep up.

Fun stuff. One thing I LOVED last night was the way the ladies brought it.

There was a trend for a few years where singers would sing through their noses.

That trend seems to have ended. The ladies sang to the mountains and in many cases, the meadows.

Another awesome girl just got turned down.

 Heartbreaking.

Except that she was seen by millions of people. I don't even know her name. Brown hair, glasses, and an absolutely beautiful voice. Heart wrenching stuff; it was a really tough moment.

You could see that many times the judges go through the pain with the talent.

Enjoyable stuff, but I'm not prepared to get too much more specific. I was already writing about J Lo's comment before MK was interviewed. It all changes so swiftly!

 Incredible show this year.

Sometimes it gets brutally mean and manipulative, but the talent, hopes and dreams of these young people: Whew!

 Makes me miss it.

 A little.

Then I grab some ice cream and coffee beans and smile.

I'm not up 'til midnight cleaning the stage.

I'm not alarming the building into the wee hours of the morning.

I miss jamming with people. It's been a while.

Each week I watch and each week I want to go to my office/studio, strap on my guitar, play and sing into the evening.

I could do that in the Theatre.

At home I have to control the volume.

I had many moments over the years playing for hours on stage, often with no one around.

 'Cept Heidi.

 Yeesh.

  AnywayZ...

Think I'll keep this one a bit short today. I had written around twenty more items, but re-read in the morning and decided to spare you the yawns.

So immina bounce outta here early today.

Huge congrats to MK and all the others.

  Stay strong; stay brave.

  Gottago.

  See you again.

  Peace.
