The DN

1  I gave an interesting writing prompt last week. I copped it from a fun book called The Daily Spark , one book in a series I found at Barnes and Noble.

2   I'm too lazy to find out which of my six hundred flash drives it's on, but it aimed itself at the new generation of students.

3   Here is the gist of it: if you had to name the historic Age that defines your generation, what would you name it and why?

4   This was asked of and aimed at the current freshmen and sophomores.

5   Interesting question.

6   Last night when I riffled through the students' papers I encountered a range of answers the majority of which echoed with truth and genuineness.

7   I'm going to share a fast list with you. These are actual titles given by today's sophomores and freshmen, their words, their self images. The list begins with sophomores up to the Age of Recklessness, then it's all freshmen.

8   I wanted them to give their Age a title. For example, some students called this The Age of Technology.

9   These are their other responses. The students explained them in some heart-wrenching pieces.

10  Here go:

  • The Age of Change
  • The Age of Destruction
  • The Age of Innovation
  • The Age of Looks
  • The Age of Selfish
You get the idea. I won't keep using the Age of because it gets repetitive. Here are more:
  • Social Media
  • Widespread Computer Usage
  • Speed and Knowledge
  • Connectivity
  • Internet
  • Electronics
  • Obesity
  • A$AP Mob Takeover
  • Recklessness
  • Differences
  • Crazy People
  • Idiots, Stupidity, Deterioration of Sanity, and What Happened?
  • Being Judged
  • Spoiled Children
  • Ridiculous Viral Trends
  • Misconception
  • Entertainment
  • 2012 Apocalypse 2013 Social Media 2014 Decline
  • The Shitty Age
  • Intelligence
  • Hopelessness
  • Downfall
  • Laziness
  • Rudeness and Bad Manners
  • Individuality
  • Ridiculous Dances
  • Color
  • Disrespect
  • Defiance
  • Life
11  A part of me wishes I had gathered my other two classes, but they're already graded and at the school.

12  Last night I had enough time to glance through a lot of these. I can assure you they were straight from the heart.

13  Eye opening.

14  Somewhere in all of this lurks the definition.

15   Perhaps the entire collection works as its own poem.

16   Topical, yes.

17   We could respond lots of words: Current. Real. Painful. Reflective. Humorous. Thought-provoking.

18  Revealing. This is what today's kids think.

19  What would YOU call this strange Age of 2014?

20  I'd be interested in listening.

21  Amazing assignment. I stumbled into it. The results astounded me. I don't know why I should be surprised.

22  There are times I think I've been blessed with the best job in the world.

23   Last night was one such night.

24   If I'm smart, and I'm reasonably sure I am, I will leave this as is.

25   I need the paint to dry.

26   I need to open the door and let in the night air.

27   I need rest.

28   Interesting stuff.

29   Gottago.

30   See you again.

31   Peace.

~H~
