The DN

 Whew.

 Got through that one.

I'm glad I didn't get into the Super Bowl this year.

Something made me not want to buy into the hype.

I still made an awesome dinner and played it as a mini-holiday.

They really got us, don't they?

I deliberately didn't read about it or sit around all day watching every special on teevee.

 I'm glad I didn't.

One team should have been there, and the other shouldn't have.

Armchair guy over here: I'm the Bronco's coach, the FIRST thing I would tell my team would be to protect the ball.

Harbaugh, or someone around Harbaugh focused on that when the Niners played the Seahawks.

The Broncos somehow skipped watching film of Seattle's aggressiveness in causing turnovers.

Yesterday one team displayed WAY more discipline and focus than did the other.

Love them or hate them the Seattle Seahawks owned the NFL this year. The right team wears the crown.

As a Niner fan, I watch a game like that and realize how really powerful our team was and is.

It's still not the championship, but it certainly is the next best thing.

Anyway, to Seattle fans; congrats. It was an exciting season, and I hope we get you next year!

Moving On, Part One: This year flies and flies. I  have felt a step behind, sort of like when your friends would ditch you as a kid.

 Everything moves fast this year.

So I  decided that I'll continue teaching whatever needs finishing this week. As often happens, I never did get to cover nearly as much as I had hoped.

The good news is that many of my students learned some nice editing tricks and demonstrated instant improvement on some recent writing prompts.

The bad news: the constant encroachment of everything else.

Anyway I took a gander at some Shakespeare things. Looks like I have a new Much Ado to purchase.

I'm excited for my sophs. We'll certainly go into Much Ado About Nothing, a wonderful comedy that should bring smiles.

Word on the street is that Joss Whedon finished The Avengers and without missing a beat decided to do Shakespeare. The reviews look great. I've taught it a few times before. Students tend to really love it once they get the language.

I also updated my word list for Romeo and Juliet. There is something nostalgic about reading the Prologue: "Two households both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene..."

I open those doors each year, and it is the grand entrance to the fun units: Shakespeare, drama, mask making, open-mic poetry, the Café Verona, Shrew, finals, graduation, summer vacay, all beginning now. That's fast.

We may even take a look at the 2013 version of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Carlo Carlei as well. The film, set in Renaissance Verona, doesn't use Shakespearean language.

I try to remain open-minded but the reviews have been abysmal.

I'm not a purist in the purest sense, but to me the poetry makes the plays. If I wanted love stories, I could find six or seven Korean dramas galaxies better than Romeo and Juliet.

Anyway, I doubt I'll be able to dust that one by. What's fun is that all sorts of new things have flown at me this year.

While some of it has slowed the process, a lot of it will bring new lessons and new approaches. It will require some creativity and critical thinking on my part.

The Common Core has put us all on a roller coaster, and it is a quick one. I'm hoping to hop on board and see where it takes us.

A lot of teachers have complained that they are behind this year. My feeling is this: I too am behind, but it is because we need to move swiftly. There is no standing on ceremony.

I'm buckled in and ready to ride. The thought of building better lessons seems fun to me.

Will there be experimentation? There already is, and if there isn't, then someone is holding up the ride.

 I realize it will challenge.

This entire year has brought tremendous challenges. We'll have to see.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to all the fun as we race to the finish this year. I need to let stuff go that didn't work and prepare for the next quick turn, dark tunnel, steep drop or sudden loop.

I spent all day yesterday grading things and getting them out of the way. That stuff takes LOTS of time. Most of it is done and we have testing this week.

My sophs take the California High School Exit Exam beginning Tuesday, four hours each day of bubble tests.

I generally begin Shakespeare on Valentine's Day. It goes with all the roses and things. I haven't even seen either of the new versions of those plays.

I will and I'll keep you posted.

Moving On, Part 2: Fast stuff. I'm a bit off balance by much of it, but I'm tanned, rested and ready.

 I'll cut it short.

 Oh.

I did send out a Special Saturday Edition of the DN. In it I talk about some fun things, like psychic stuff and all. I told you last week that I would send something out, so it's there, just scroll right and up and you should be able to navigate it.

I love all of it. Okay I got up for a second and the Bells of St. Mary's graduation scene played on TCM. Right now. I was waiting for the Much Ado pics to download and heard Pomp and Circumstance. Looked up and there it was. Viola. Someone's on it.

I won't stop your day to chat on it though.

 It's Monday.

Your job today and EVERY Monday is to fly low.

I got a saloon to run.

  See you again.

  Peace.
