The Once-in-a-While
Daily News
1 Go large or go home.
2 Just returned from Shasta after having spent time with John and Effie Arnolfo. I'll try to avoid a blow-by-blow commentary because old sit-coms have pointed out that doing so is almost the equivalent of wearing a lampshade on one's head at a party, which I have done.
3 You can run but you can't hide. Anything stupid, I have done it.
4 AnywayZ, had massive fun. Here's a brief overview, and then we'll see where it will all take us. Strap in, yo.
5 I got up here last Wednesday, and on arrival, John and I drove way high, parked at the highest lookout we could find and had a great conversation, as well as some tremendous views across that part of the Earth, all the way to the tip of Mt. Lassen.
6 We went there to shoot sunset pics. We sort of rode into the sunset, in a non-cowpoke sort of way.
7 Tremendous.
8 There's a lot to be said for vacations in the Fall. I was always a summer vacation/get-serious-in-September kind of guy.
9 Fun times over. Get back to work. That mentality.
10 Shasta. Can't beat the place.
11 <sigh>
12 I thought I had written more, but to me, the fewer the items, the better the occasions. Which I have to consider plural.
13 Occasions.
14 As I wrote this last night, life kept introducing its royal self to me. Everybody was screaming lightly, causing the inimitable Rocky-the-Wonder-Dog to fits of howls. Roll over Steve Perry. I was safely home. And I loved it.
15 A different feeling. Pure life, and appreciation.
16 Yeesh.
17 Moving On, Part One: I'd like to begin this session with putting all my thoughts and prayers out to the people in Sonoma and Napa counties. If you are okay, let all your friends know. I got home safely yesterday from Shasta but was receiving all sorts of different reports coming in. I eventually found one emergency station on the way down Highway 5, but I was a sodden rag by the time I got home.
18 My British Siri led me to my daughter Caitlin's doorstep, so I thought I'd drop in. Effie had given me some frozen leftover food from this awesome place in Shasta called Lily's. I jumped out of my car, gave the magic door knock, and Caitlin opened the door. By some miracle, EVERYBODY was there, including their wonderful friend and talented artist Shannon.
17 The Beebee girls were asleep, but Li'l Jack was totally holding court.
18 Laughter everywhere, and they had a huge Door Dash meal going on. It didn't matter. It was coals to Newcastle, and I'll be enjoying much of it tonight.
19 What mattered was that everybody was there and that everybody was safe.
20 We shared lots of laughs, and things seemed semi-normal, if anything could be considered semi-normal these days.
21 I'll leave that one on the field.
22 Moving On, Part One: I know that it is fun to travel, but I'm finding that the older I get, the more I prefer sitting and doing nothing.
23 I like that because that pairs well with daily rituals. Sometimes just knowing where your underwear and socks are can be considered a work of art.
24 My goal for the next few days is to ride out whatever happens. We have seventeen fires burning in this state, and I'm over here worrying about where I put a box of pretzels.
25 It so weird. Otherworldly.
26 I haven't even had coffee yet.
27 If you aren't a coffee person, you might not understand.
28 There are reasons that billions of songs have been written about coffee.
29 Sidebar: I forgot to make coffee last night. Effie had coffee set up for us before dinner was over most nights. I got spoiled.
30 I'm about to have a cup. Jack has been running around throwing tantrums. I sigh. He's a little goof. Everyone is reading him one of those pop-out books that have cows saying moo and stuff. Is it just me, or are the very last pages of those ripped out of every one of those books?
31 Who cares. Music to my ears, complete with little tantrums and stuff. Sometimes there rests therein a poignancy that cannot be touched.
32 I'm loving it.
33 I'm going to go get coffee. This requires hiding all of the things I have attached to my laptop to be hidden under a pillow. Li'l Jack can be a heat-seeking missile in moments like these. He's off napping down the road apiece at my house. I work with wired headphones AND a wired mouse.
34 A cat says...
35 A rooster says...
36 A pig says, "Oh-eh, Oh-eh, Oh-eh..."
37 Ah, the joys of phonics!
38 It's mid-afternoon of today. I'm still at Caitlin's. The girls are down, and the baby monitor is playing a piano version of
The Rainbow Connection.
39 Whoever is directing this show is doing a bang-up job.
40 Moving On, Part Two: S-h-h-h-h-h-h-h. Beebeez sleeping all over town.
41 And the response of my dancing fingers to this epic piece is this: pure sluggishness.
42 I really wanted to add little table-scraps of useless information, but I'll be looking up from my grave at this pace.
43 So! You dawnt belief me! I zee howt eez! Did you know that Kermit Zee Frog vus ambidextrous? Here, looooook below:
44 It's the Man.
45 With that, I gotttago.
46 See you again.
47 Have a GREAT day.
48 Hope you're all safe.
49 Live life.
50 Love life. Especially now.
51 Peace.
