The DN

1   By golly it's Thursday once more.

2   Holy Thursday.

3   I suddenly have lots to do.

4   I've tried keeping paperwork to a minimum this week so that I could exact some much-needed rest.

5   The past two weeks are a blur.

6   But I made it to Holy Thursday.

7   I survived yet another meeting yesterday.

8   We've actually had back-to-back good meetings.

9   These from a guy who deplores meetings.

10  We were able to have feedback on what to teach next year.

11  I try to play it safe so I'll have three classes of sophomores and two of freshmen geniuses.

12  Oxymoron. M'bad.

13  Or so I've been told.

14  And I'll hopefully have a prep period an hour earlier this year. I went straight through and had a prep the last period of the day this year, which caused all sorts of eating and sleeping disorders.

15   I'll also share my prep period with my fellow friend and Grateful Dead aficionado Charlie.

16  Every now and again I call him Mr. Charlie.

17  He's also a drummer.

18  Thems is good news. He has trouble drumming these days because that happens sometimes to drummers.

19  I've heard him drum on a desk. The guy is lightning.

20  That's nice. Everything moved in a nice direction.

21   Maybe it was the red moon.

22   I just heard the wind chimes outside. I always assume that's my Mom letting me know things are gonna be all right.

23  She always was pretty good at that.

24   I'm still a little off my game.

25   Last night I had to write this nonsense in early evening.

26   I'm not really used to that.

27  So things are still a bit topsy turvy.

28  I just got spell checked. I got called out on "topsy turvy".

29  I beg yours.

30  That's the sort of thing that makes people a bit topsy turvy.

31  Push "ignore" button. I had it right. Their correction was this: "Topsy" for "topsy". Must be a specific topsy. And "curvy" for "torvy". Sounds like the name of a stripper. Let me do the spelling. I've misspelled some doozies. Whoops. "dogies".  M' bad.

32  Anybody lookin'?

33  Moving On, Part One: It's garbage day once again.

34   I just wrote that so I would remember when I re-read this in the morning.

35  This morning, that is to say.

36   Holy Thursday.

37   AND garbage day.

38   Every day is now something.

39   I needs must purchase a new planner, one that has all these days in it.

40   Do they even make those?

41  fdafdfdfsadfsadfsdf.

42   It's right at my fingertips.

43   I'm thinking of doing some drama workshops today and tomorrow.

44  I might have my students play Questions from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

45  Tom Stoppard.

46   He and a fellow named Marc Norman wrote Shakespeare in Love

47  That remains one of my favorite films ever

48  That and Shrew.

49   Lots to do.

50   I gottago.

51   Have a lovely Holy Thursday.

52   Fly low.

53   See you again.

54   Peace.

The DN

1   Yesterday I overslept.

2   Today I slept in.

3   There is a difference.

4   One is by accident.

5   The other one deliberate.

6   It happened somewhere in the 3 a.m. when I awakened to the teevee flickering the Giants/Dodgers' game.

7  My initial reaction was this: is this the longest game ever played?

8   Logic got the best of me after a few innings.

9   Don't get old.

10  Good lawdy, don't get old.

11  It ain't what it's cracked up to be.

12  That's all I have to say about that subject, but I thought I should give it a shout before my fingers fall off from all this typing.

13  Yes junior, I said, "typing".

14  Whippersnapper.

15  Anybody lookin'?

16  <Looks around>

17  Guess not.

18  Anyhow I'm late today.

19  I usually write this nonsense at night while watching banalities on teevee.

20  I got engrossed in the ball game, and in trying to multi-task. I wanted to cook, to clean the house, to clean the garage, to fix the fence...you get the drift.

21  We all ThINK about doing things like that, but every now and again we feel we can get up and do it.

22  <basketball buzzer>

23  I am of the age where I have mastered the fine art of going into a room and not remembering why.

24  Lunacy.

25  So here it is 7:07, the moment I was born, and I've no idea about too much of anything.

26  Get old.

27  I was just kidding earlier.

28  We have a glass suncatcher in the front window, which faces east.

29  The window. I correctly placed it in the sentence.

30  AnywayZ

31  It sends this little orb around the living room. The orb swims like a fancy fish.

32  It moves one way, changes direction, and moves back towards the sun.

33  It's pretty entertaining, in a Pollyannaesque sort of way.

34  <basketball buzzer>

35  I just got a foul for being obtuse.

36  Something just clicked in the other room.

37  It was clearly a Heidi click.

38  Every now and again she lets me know she's around.

39  I guess the ten bazillion coincidences that happened up 'til now didn't grab her attention.

40  ffsadffdfafdf.

41  I keep waiting for them to come and cart me off.

42  I sweh.

43  It's now 7:14 and I needs must go.

44  I have twenty minutes to put on my shoes and socks, gather all my stuff and get out the door.

45  That would take a young person around forty-five seconds.

46  Don't get old.

47  Or get old.

48  Just don't hang out in between. You become a miscreant. To keep from that, I shall give you my favorite Haiku:

I don't like Haikus.
I don't understand Haikus.
Refrigerator.

49  Gottago.

50  Love yous.

51  See you again.

52   Peace.

The DN

1   I did nothing.

2   Last night I mean.

3   Oh, I got off work and then mailed my late taxes.

4   I ate at some lousy Pho place. They didn't even have meatballs.

5   They were across the street from the post office.

6   I was lucky with my life on crossing that one.

7   I had me a bowl of pho on a hot day. Nobody cared.

8   Evil ran amok.

9   I got home late, because I stayed at school like I was told.

10  I mailed my taxes AT the post office, even though I tried other arenas.

11  I had pho from a strange pho place, not that there are any unstrange pho places.

12  By the time I got home I fell zombielike into the proverbial coma.

13  I fed the dog and crashed famously on my sofa, front door wide open so I could enjoy the gorgeous afternoon.

14   I drifted off for around a half hour when I heard a knocking at my door.

15   Somehow some way some young rapscallion mined his way past Phoebe, my personal guard dog at the gates of Hades.

16   The knocking came from this miscreant's knuckles. He looked like a postal worker, only more eager. He had a postalesque outfit with letters from his company neatly embroidered on his creased shirt.

17  He had a clipboard.

18  I'd seen this fellow in many past lives.

19   Having been knocked out of a deep slumber, I was no ears and all polite.

20  Ever been there?

21  On a normal day I would have interrupted his first three words with, "I'm busy and the dog's upset would you mind?" and closed the door.

22   But I felt tanned, rested and ready.

23   The fellow went on for around six years about how his company (he kept pointing to its embroidered name on his dark blue shirt) was the next big thing in energy conservation.

24   Eventually he ran out of gas and brought out his pen for me to sign up for whatever it was he wanted me to sign.

25   I told him I wasn't interested and to be careful because my dog might take a chunk out of his pants.

26   The guy assured me he was dog-friendly.

27   Phoebe saw him as the Enemy. She stood vigilant.

28   An amiable ally, if you ask this Old Brown Shoe.

29   The fellow finally realized that my pen nor my checkbook were to be of no use to him, and eagerly handed me his card. It had the same logo as the logo on his shirt.

30   As he moved to the gate, Phoebe unleashed her raging terror on him, which consisted of seven barks and a quick nip at his back pocket.

31

32 That's all true.

33  I stood unapologetic, like Socrates.

34

35  No Platonic nonsense.

36   I returned to the couch, clicked on TCM and drifted off.

37   Gone With the Wind played.

38   You can't make this stuff up.

39   Moving On, Part One: I'm writing this fresh.

40   Right after that fellow left I decided I wasn't doing a thing for anyone or anything hereafter.

41   I went to the closet, pulled out a nice comforter and went back to the couch. My plan was to pull the comforter over my head and rule out the world. Sleep befell me, but not without interruption.

42   I thought of grading papers.

43    I thought of planning the rest of the week.

44    I thought of paying bills.

45    I thought of looking at school emails to see if there were any further orders from the day.

46   But then I thought of sleep. <long smile>

47   I thought of the Hamlet quote I usually save for the last day of school. It goes like this:

48   The Rest is Silence.

49   Each year when I am done with everything at school I write those words on the board. They are always the last thing I write.

50  They are Hamlet's last words.

51  The alarm just went off in the other room.

52   Some advertisement just went off in a different window on my computer.

53   The world has awakened and is already nipping at me.

54

55   Know what I did? I did nothing.

56   The rest is silence.

57   Have a GREAT day. Tell the bastards it will have to wait.

58   Fly low.

59   See you again.

60   Peace.

The DN

 Say Cheese.

1   I've been playing dodge ball with cars lately.

2   Yeesh.

3   Anybody lookin'?

4   Last night I had already dodged a bullet in the parking lot of Save Mart by a fellow who came into the lot at around a million miles per hour just as I was exiting.

5   I'm not EVEN gonna lie.

6   Thank heavens for the turn of the earth.

7   I steadied myself and proceeded down the road.

8   This fellow gave me the stank eye.

9   Uh...okay Mr. Dents-and-Faded-Paint-In-My-'82-Corolla-Man-Person sir.

10  May you rust in peace.

11  Anybody lookin'?

12  Scary.

13  Welcome to the wide wonderful world of 2014.

14  Just between you and me?

15  I'm WAY tired of 2014.

16  Everyone driving is preoccupied with everything except looking around and proceeding in a safe fashion.

17  I feel like a guy who already might be dead and who is attempting to write you from the great beyond.

18  Seriously.

19  2014.

20  Yeesh.

21  Moving On, Part One: 2014 indeed.

22  How do we deal with all of this?

23  Ah, we just do.

24  You do.

25  I do. I reckon.

26  We all do.

27  It's simply how it's done.

28  Moving On, Part Two: Frankly I can't stand it.

29  Stand what?

30  fafdffsdfdsfsfsfdsaf.

31  Need another example?

32  Last night in the midst of my constructing these eloquent words of wisdom, the Blogger guys or whoever is hired to support this process again refused me the privilege of previewing how this thing will look once I post.

33  I again run around editorless.

34  Oh bother.

35  Nothing new.

36  Last night I dozed trying desperately to finish two classes of short essays.

37   I figured it would be cake.

38   I began scratching and adding my wisdom to the scribbles of the students, but soon yawned, first silently, then sleepily, and finally to-the-point-of deathed-ly.

39  Some students have mastered the fine art of murdering their teachers through banality.

40  Anybody lookin'?

41  But enough of that. I got started, but after around three papers found myself slipping into a severe slumber.

42  I awakened  somewhere around ten and realized I hadn't made a dent.

43  The clock spoke. It was right out of a Pixar movie.

44  "You've too many left to do, and you've run out of time."

45  And so it goes.

46  So it goes.

47  Fortunately I've a few brilliant sorts who can write with the wind. Thank heavens for them, and for their parents for teaching them to read and write.

48  There is hope for 2014. I think.

49  The clock continues to spoke.

50  Wish good things. I'm losing patience with all these Mondays. They have shot past my normal Nemesis, which is Tuesdays.

51  I'm over it. I'm goin' in. You go in too. Let's DO this. Fly low.

52  See you again.

53  Peace.
